Nichole Comella, BSN, RN, didn’t always see herself in scrubs. Growing up on the west side of Indianapolis, she was more into car shows and riding four-wheelers than thinking about a career in healthcare. But that all changed in high school when her aunt, who had just become a nurse, shared stories about the profession that sparked something in Nichole. “She told me everything about nursing,” Nichole said. “She really inspired me.”
That inspiration turned into action. Nichole pursued nursing at Ivy Tech and graduated in 2018. A personal experience helped her decide exactly where she wanted to work. “A close family friend had a heart attack, and the emergency team at Hendricks Regional Health saved his life,” she recalled. “After visiting him there, I told my mom, ‘I want to work there.’ The staff and the atmosphere just felt right.” She’s been at Hendricks ever since, working in the inpatient unit at Brownsburg Hospital.
Nichole says she was attracted to nursing because she loves helping people. “For me, the biggest reward is knowing I can make a difference—especially when someone is going through a tough time.”
Earlier this year, she had one of those moments that reminded her just how much of a difference she can make. Nichole noticed one of her patients was bleeding. While looking for the source, she discovered a puncture wound that required immediate surgery.
Her coworkers were so moved by her quick thinking and compassion that they nominated her for a DAISY Award. This national program recognizes nurses who go above and beyond in patient care. The award committee agreed and organized a ceremony to honor Nichole. “I was really surprised and couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It was a very emotional day.”
Nichole’s team says she’s the kind of nurse everyone wants on their shift. They describe her as compassionate, courageous, and always willing to lend a hand. She’s known for her positive attitude and for consistently going the extra mile to make sure patients get the best care possible.
When she’s not at work, Nichole loves spending time with her family, friends, and her four dogs. She also enjoys traveling and exploring new places. “Next on my list is the Grand Tetons in Wyoming,” she said. “I’d love to start there and work my way up through Yellowstone and then to Glacier Park in Montana.”
